Bethell & Think Hire: Delivering Low-Carbon Power for Critical Wastewater Upgrades in the North West

Think Hire and Bethell Wastewater Project

Overview

Think Hire is proud to support Bethell in delivering major wastewater capital projects in the North West. These long-term infrastructure schemes include a new pumping station and 620m tunnel in Salford, and a capacity upgrade for sewer systems in Cumbria to reduce localised flooding.

By replacing traditional generators with off-grid renewable technology, Think Hire helps Bethell align with the UK’s Net Zero 2050 pathway and the water sector’s ambitious AMP cycle sustainability goals.

The Solution

To support these demanding civil engineering environments, we deployed a multi-faceted Energy-as-a-Service package:

  • Solartainer Versatile: Renewable solar hybrid power for site cabins.
  • SiteGrid X45 BESS: Battery energy storage to stabilise power during critical construction phases.
  • Think Energy Panorama: Real-time digital asset management to optimise energy usage and eliminate avoidable generator hours.

Results: Salford Project

CO2 Saved 97,454 kg CO2 Avoided (89% Reduction)
Fuel Saved 36,637 Litres Fuel Saved
Cost Saved 50% Reduction in Net Cost
Renewable Mix 89% Battery & Solar Power Split

Results: Cumbria Project

CO2 Saved 55,800 kg CO2 Avoided (98% Reduction)
Fuel Saved 37,704 Litres Fuel Saved
Cost Saved 60% Reduction in Net Cost
Renewable Mix 91% Battery & Solar Power Split

Proven Resilience for Infrastructure

By adopting an Energy-as-a-Service model, Bethell benefited from fully managed, always-available power without the burden of fuel handling or maintenance. The hybrid setup maintained steady output during high-load activity, delivering the resilience needed for critical infrastructure works in demanding conditions.

Total energy delivered across both projects: 19,625 kWh — enough to power over 60 typical UK homes for a month.

A Strong and Growing Partnership

The partnership between Bethell and Think Hire shows how effective collaboration between contractors and clean-energy specialists can turn ESG goals into real progress. Through tailored hybrid energy systems and real-time performance data, we are proud to support the essential upgrades to the wastewater network while driving a more sustainable future for the community.
