Are Hybrid Battery Generator / BESS Units Portable?

5 Oct, 2026

Absolutely. Portability is one of the biggest benefits of Think Hire’s hybrid battery generators and battery energy storage systems. Housed in compact, robust, weatherproof units, they can be transported easily to wherever they are needed on site, and repositioned again and again as your project progresses.

So what makes our hybrid battery generators and battery energy storage systems so versatile and portable, and what benefits does this flexibility bring for your site, your team and your budget?

What Makes Hybrid Battery Generators and BESS portable?

All Think Hire hybrid battery generators and battery energy storage systems are designed to be as compact as possible.

Our popular SiteGrid X45 weighs just 1185kg, easily within the lifting power of most forklifts or site cranes, with a footprint of just 1.86m2. Yet portable does not have to mean low power; even our largest BESS, the brand new SiteGrid X1000, which delivers a massive 948kWh capacity and 1,000 kVA peak (10 s); 675 kVA rated power, comes packaged in just a 10ft x 7.5ft container.

Heavy duty skids, forklift slots and crane lifting eyes make for easy deployment across the small to medium units in our BESS range, and our industry leading Solartainer solar hybrid generators. That means that no specialist equipment is required beyond what you already have on a typical site. Larger units, such as the X500 and X1000 can easily be relocated using a tower crane.

What are the Benefits of Portable Energy?

There are multiple benefits to having portable power on site, including:

  • Reduced labour costs – quick and easy deployment saves your team time and trouble, enhancing productivity and cutting costs

  • Faster deployment – portability means you can get started sooner on urgent repairs, and cut downtime between different phases of a job

  • Lower hire costs – by redeploying a single unit across your site, you could save on hiring multiple units

  • Flexibility – most sites have varying power demands across the life of the project. Portability allows you to meet these changing needs quickly and easily

Typical Applications for Portable Power Solutions

Portable hybrid battery generators and battery energy storage systems offer flexible, scalable power for a range of applications including:

  • Construction and infrastructure sites – powering everything from welfare cabins to power tools, cranes to electric vehicles and plant

  • Highway projects – providing portable temporary power for repairs and refurbishment projects which often take place at night

  • Rail maintenance – where projects can extend along significant lengths of track, requiring frequent repositioning

  • Emergency repairs – deploying power fast as part of a rapid response to minimise delays and disruption

  • Short term evens and festivals – portable power is ideal for all kinds of outdoor events, especially off-grid gatherings like festivals on farmland

How to reposition hybrid battery generators and battery energy storage systems

There are several factors that should be considered before moving hybrid battery generators and battery energy storage systems, and you should always read and follow the guidance provided with your unit:

  • Ground conditions of target site – ensure that the ground is stable, level and able to take the weight of the unit

  • Transport routes – ensure that the route is clear of obstacles and can be traversed by the crane or forklift you are using

  • Safe disconnection and reconnection – ensure that fully qualified staff are available to safely disconnect and reconnect the unit at either end

If you have any doubts about the safety or correct procedures for moving hybrid battery generators and battery energy storage systems, please do not hesitate to ask. Your safety is our priority and the Think Hire team will always be happy to help.
