Portable Generator Hire – A Simple Answer To A Growing Problem

Date: 03/08/23

Last week we covered the launch of a new BBC TV series, called What They Really Mean for You. This eye-opening series is looking at sustainability and environmental issues and how they affect our everyday lives. In this week’s programme, available now on BBC iPlayer, the topic was how to heat homes and businesses in the most sustainable way. It’s a subject close to our heart here at Think Hire. We’re constantly working to help our customers to heat, light and power their sites as sustainably as possible with environmentally friendly portable generator hire.

Heat pumps – the future of heating?

The programme explains how, for the UK Government, heat pumps are seen as the future of Britain’s heating. In many ways, you’ll have no choice, as sales of new gas boilers are being banned from 2035. But much like the banning of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, the replacements are not taking off nearly as fast as they need to, and the clock is ticking.

The target is to have 600,000 heat pumps installed in UK homes every year. Currently, that number sits at just a tenth of that, despite a Government grant of £5,000 towards each installation. There simply isn’t enough interest in these new heating systems, and even if there was, there aren’t enough trained installers to get anywhere near the annual target.

What is a heat pump?

Heat pumps work like a fridge in reverse. They draw heat from the atmosphere and use it to warm water for radiators and domestic water supplies. At first glance, they appear very efficient, creating three units of heat for every one unit of electricity used to power them. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as that. Since electricity costs three times as much as gas, they cost around the same to run as a gas boiler. They also cost a fortune to install, with the £5,000 grant covering less than half the cost of a typical installation.

Of course, the other issue with heat pumps is that they need electricity to run them, and this has to come from somewhere. The National Grid is already struggling with demand, and some experts estimate that this demand will double by 2050, from 60GW at peak to around 120GW. At the same time, capacity will be shrinking as gas-fired power stations are taken off-line and renewable energy struggles to get connected.

The greener alternative from Think Hire

Most alternative ways of heating your home or your construction site, involve fossil fuels at some stage of the process. Whether you’re powering heat pumps or using electricity to generate gas for cutting edge hydrogen boilers. However, there is one source of energy that is clean, abundant, and available to you quickly and easily via portable generator hire.

Think Hire can design a portable generator hire system that delivers all the power you need for your site from solar energy alone. You can use it for site lighting, electric vehicles and plant, and even to heat your welfare units and offices with heat pumps if you want. There are no expensive installation costs, no high running costs and no second-hand environmental damage, like the electricity needed to make the gas for hydrogen boilers. Just clean, green power from the greatest power source in our solar system.
