Generator Hire Experts Join Fit 4 Offshore Renewables

Date: 21/03/25

Generator hire experts, Think Hire, may be better known for our solar powered generator hire, but we are also a major player in the wider world of cutting edge sustainable energy solutions.

This experience and expertise was underlined recently by our inclusion as one of just 17 innovative UK businesses who were selected to strengthen their capabilities and prepare for offshore wind contracts as part of the Fit 4 Offshore Renewables programme.

The new Fit 4 Offshore Renewables scheme is being delivered by the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, the UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore renewable energy. The programme is sponsored by the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership, the UK’s flagship supply chain growth funding and business support organisation dedicated to offshore wind.

Both organisations were impressed by Think Hire’s sustainable off-grid energy solutions, and our commitment to supporting the offshore renewable energy sector and driving the transition to cleaner, more sustainable power.

A big week for wind

The news comes in an exciting week for wind energy, as the United Nations revealed that wind and wave power would be included in the calculations of a country’s GDP for the first time from 2030. The contribution of wind and wave power will be based on the estimated price of the energy that would be able to be produced by turbines in each country.

The European Technology & Innovation Platform on Wind Energy (ETIPWind) estimates that wind energy already provides more than 20% of Europe’s electricity, including 56% in Denmark and 29% in the UK. The International Energy Agency estimates that wind will be the number one source of power in Europe by 2027, with the European Commission aiming for wind to produce over 50% of Europe’s electricity by 2050.

The importance of wind power

Wind energy is important to both the economy and the environment. ETIPWind estimates that the sector supported 370,000 European jobs in 2023, and contributed over €57.2bn to the GDP, including €10bn in taxes to local governments. There are almost 250 factories involved in wind turbine production across the continent.

What’s more, every gigawatt of onshore wind capacity generates €3.4bn of value to the European economy, with offshore wind capacity generating €2.8bn. That means each new offshore turbine adds €27m to the pot.

Just as importantly, wind energy meant a reduction of 139 million tonnes of CO2 per year from Europe’s energy production. Wind power not only creates zero carbon, but also creates no SOx, NOx or PM. Even with the carbon costs of turbine production and construction factored in, wind energy creates around 95% less CO2 than gas power stations and around 98% less than coal power.

Proud to play our part

Think Hire is proud to be playing its part in the future of wind energy in the UK and Europe as members of the Fit 4 Offshore Renewables programme. With the climate emergency becoming clearer every year, supporting sustainable, renewable energy has never been more important as we aim for Net Zero and a carbon-free energy system.

What’s more, with international energy supplies becoming increasingly unreliable, renewable energy, such as wind, is set to play a vital role in Britain’s energy security both now and in the future.
