Mobile Welfare Units to Site Generator Hire, It All Helps
Date: 23/06/25
When you see factories spewing pollution into the air and a constant stream of traffic exhausts pumping out greenhouse gases, it’s easy to think that there’s nothing that you can do, on a personal level, to prevent climate change.
However, as a major new study from the University of Birmingham has shown, even small, day-to-day changes in how we live can make a significant difference to global CO2 emissions and the global warming that they cause.
The same is true on our construction sites, road and rail repairs and any other temporary works across the country. By changing our site generator hire, and choosing more environmentally friendly mobile welfare units, we can all contribute to the fight against climate change.
What did the Birmingham study find?
As reported in Science Daily, the study by the University of Birmingham, working together with the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, looked at the domestic emissions of the top 23% of global emitters.
They identified 21 low carbon lifestyle steps that could be taken, and found that if they were adopted, they could reduce the global carbon footprint by 10.4 gigatons of CO2. That is around 40% of household emissions in the 116 countries they looked at.
A gigaton is a billion metric tons, or a trillion kilograms. According to Statista, the world emits around 37.4 gigatons of CO2 every year, so cutting this by 10.4 gigatons is no small impact, demonstrating that every little really does help.
"Our study shows that adopting low-carbon lifestyles can play a pivotal role in mitigating climate change,” says the study’s author, Dr Yuli Shan, from the University of Birmingham. “By targeting high-emitting households, we can achieve significant carbon reductions and move closer to our global climate targets."

Change begins at home
Overall, the Birmingham study showed that adopting a low-carbon lifestyle could help to cut global household emissions by up to 40%. Here at Think Hire, we believe that the same could be true if the construction industry also adopted low-carbon measures.
Switching site generator hire to the renewable power of the Solartainer, and improving that environmental performance even further with glycerine power, can substantially cut the carbon emissions of a typical site. Combine this with energy efficient, environmentally friendly mobile welfare units and your site can save even more.
Better still, by switching to renewable site generator hire, you’ll not only cut emissions, but you’ll also cut operating costs too.
We all have a part to play
Naturally, national policies and international agreements, such as the Paris Climate Agreement, make a big difference to the fight against climate change. But that doesn’t mean that we’re powerless to make a difference ourselves in our daily lives.
“This study demonstrates that adopting consumption-based low-carbon strategies is essential for climate mitigation,” explains co-author, Dr Yuru Guan.
“It’s crucial for policymakers to consider these findings,” agrees Professor Klaus Hubacek, from the University of Groningen. “They need to implement strategies that encourage sustainable consumption patterns."
If you’d like to implement your own strategies to encourage sustainable consumption on your sites, then Think Hire is here to help. Our expert team will work closely with you to understand your power requirements in detail. Then they’ll design a renewable energy system including site generator hire, mobile welfare units and more, to help you achieve your environmental goals with ease.
It’s all part of the service at Think Hire, because we believe that no change is wasted. As the Birmingham study shows, even the smallest step has a part to play in the global fight against climate change.
