New Climate Report Boosts Case for a Solar Powered Generator

We’ve all been enjoying the sunshine lately, but the warmer weather is not all about beach trips and barbecues. However, as a major new report shows, the ever-increasing rises in temperature are having some serious effects on health, homes and the world around us.

What did the report say?

The annual State of the UK Climate Report from the Met Office makes sobering reading. The report looks in detail at 2024 and includes some staggering statistics. For example, comparing 2024 to the average between 1961-1990:

  • The number of days 5°C above average has doubled

  • The number of days 8°C above normal has tripled

  • The number of days 10°C above normal has quadrupled

2024 was the warmest spring on record, but that has already been beaten by 2025. Overall, of the top ten hottest years on record, five have occurred in the last eight years, and all ten of the hottest years have occurred since 2003. As the report concludes, extreme weather is the UK’s new normal.

Why is this a problem?

On the surface, warmer temperatures may seem like a good thing, but there is a downside. Every heatwave brings with it a significant number of excess deaths among the elderly and other vulnerable groups. They also bring an increased risk of wildfires, destroying countryside and homes.

Warmer air also holds more moisture. The report found that the UK is 16% wetter than the late 20th century, with months containing twice the normal monthly rainfall or more up by 50%. This increasingly wet climate adds the risk of devastating floods.

October 2023 to March 2024 was the wettest winter-half-year in 250 years of records. Of the ten wettest winter-half-years, six have occurred since 2000 according to the Met Office. This excess rainfall increases the flood risk right across the country. Coastal areas are at even greater risk of flooding, with UK sea levels rising almost 20cm since 1900, faster than the global average. Once again, the last three years have all broken records for the highest sea level around the UK coast.

Climate change is undeniable

If you had any doubts about the effect of human induced climate change, resulting from carbon emissions, then this latest report should convince you that you need to take action and you need to do it now.

The good news is that you don’t have to ditch your car and start cycling everywhere, or turn your lawn into a solar farm, to make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change. You can make a real difference quickly and easily by switching to a solar powered generator for your construction site, your road or rail project or any other temporary workspace that needs electricity.

Better still, with Think Hire, switching to a solar powered generator will not only help to save the planet, but it will usually save you on your operating costs too, even once you’ve factored in the extra costs of hire. Using less fossil fuels cuts your fuel bills; it’s as simple as that.

"Observations show that our climate in the UK is now notably different to what it was just a few decades ago," says the report’s lead author, Met Office climate scientist Mike Kendon. "Every year that goes by is another upward step on the warming trajectory our climate is on.”

Met Office Chief Scientist Professor Stephen Belcher agrees, saying that the evidence of the impacts of climate change shows the urgent need for the UK to adapt.

You can adapt your company to tackle the effects of climate change right now by switching to a solar powered generator. To find out more about our industry-first Solartainer Versatile portable solar powered generator, and how it can cut carbon emissions and cut costs on your site, talk to Think Hire today.

One site switching to solar powered generators might not change the world, but when you add them all up, together we can make a real difference.
