The Time to Change Your Portable Generator Hire is Now

Date: 01/09/25

Like many people, you probably have little doubt about the reality of climate change. You’re aware of the effect that human activity is having on the environment, and you might’ve even gotten as far as thinking about making changes to your portable generator hire to cut back on fossil fuel use.

The problem is that ‘awareness’ and ‘plans’ don’t actually make any impact on climate change.  As long as people keep thinking that climate change is something that’s going to happen at some time in the future, then they’ll continue to put off making real changes here and now.

Unfortunately, climate change is no longer a distant threat. It’s a current reality. It’s happening now, and so now is the time to make a change. Let’s take a look at just a couple of examples of the impact climate change is having on the UK today.

Firewaves

Changes to our weather patterns as a result of climate change have led to a significantly increased risk of wildfires. These have been making the news everywhere from London’s heaths to Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh. In fact, wildfires have become so common in the UK that experts have had to coin a new word – Firewaves.

Firewaves describe the phenomenon of multiple wildfires springing up simultaneously in urban areas. Britain has always had wildfires in rural areas, but urban wildfires are an increasing problem. Guillermo Rein, professor of fire science at Imperial College London, is in no doubt what is causing them. “Climate change is bringing more heatwaves and longer dry spells,” he says. “These conditions dry out (vegetation) and increase the risk of wildfires. That risk is much greater now than it was even a decade ago."

Bluefin Tuna

Another remarkable effect of climate change has been the arrival of previously unseen species in UK waters. With our seas warming considerably in recent years, we’ve seen the arrival of octopus, bluefin tuna and mauve stinger jellyfish, to name but a few, while many native species have been forced north into cooler climes.

‘So what?’ you might think. But this is more than just a curious change, it’s a dire warning, as Dr Bryce Stewart, a senior research fellow at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth explains: “It’s a bit like the canary in the coal mine,” she says. “The quite extraordinary changes we've seen over the last few years really do indicate an ecosystem under flux.”
