Your Choice of Site Generator Hire Could Reduce Wildfires
Date: 12/05/25
One of the reasons that many of our customers choose to change their site generator hire to solar powered or hybrid generators from Think Hire is so that they can do their bit in the fight against climate change.
But for others, climate change feels like something that is happening somewhere else, or something that won’t impact their own lives anytime soon. The extreme hurricanes in Florida, or the devastating wildfires in California seem a world away from our daily lives here in Britain. Unfortunately, as the recent hot, dry spring has proved, the effects of climate change are happening to us here in the UK, right now.
Record wildfires in 2025
We all watched in horror recently as California wildfires burned out of control, swallowing the luxury mansions of the rich and famous in the Pacific Palisades. 2025 has already seen more wildfires in just four months than the record for a whole year, set in 2019.
According to the Global Wildfire Information System, over 113 square miles, or 29,200 hectares, of the UK have already burned so far this year, beating the full year record of 28,100 by more than a thousand hectares. More than 69 square miles, or 18,000 hectares, burned in just seven days at the start of April, with one wildfire getting within 16 miles of the town of Aberystwyth.
Record weather
Although wildfires are not uncommon in the spring, the exceptionally dry and warm start to the year did not help. The Met Office says that March saw more than one and a half times the normal sunshine for the month and less than half the usual rainfall.
One study estimates that the effects of climate change make this type of ‘fire weather’ six times more likely. “We are likely to see more fires and possibly worse fires with climate change,” said one of the experts on the team.
Burning houses
With the weather remaining unseasonably dry through the end of April and beginning of May, experts are growing concerned about the potential for further, more damaging fires later in the summer.
"My number one worry is what is going to happen in the summer, when there are fewer wildfires, but they are bigger and they can be seriously catastrophic," says Guillermo Rein, professor of fire science at Imperial College London. “You could have one summer wildfire that cannot be stopped and actually goes on to burn houses."
The time to change your site generator hire is now
The record wildfires are just the latest evidence of the impact that climate change is having on everyone. It is not happening in far-flung corners of the world, and it is not just something our grandchildren will have to deal with. It is happening to us, right here in the UK, and it is up to us to do whatever we can to prevent it from getting any worse.
Changing your site generator hire to a portable solar powered generator might seem like a small change, but it will cut the CO2 your site releases from fossil fuels. If every site across the UK did the same, the reduction in these greenhouse gases would be substantial and significant.
We’re not suggesting that you can change the world just by changing your site generator hire, but you can do your bit. And if we all do our bit, then we can affect real change on climate change.
